About

Primary Care is the cornerstone program of the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, or BVMI. Through medical exams/evaluations, education, early detection, treatment and ongoing care, we contribute to healthy lifestyles and improved medical outcomes for our patients. At our onsite medical clinic in Hackensack, NJ, BVMI provides comprehensive medical care, free of charge, to residents of Bergen County who work, but cannot afford medical insurance. Services provided include primary, preventive, chronic and urgent care, specialty care, lab services, mental health support and case management to address Social Determinants of Health. In April, 2020, BVMI launched a telehealth program in response to COVID-19 and the resulting temporary closure of the clinic. The program has allowed us to continue providing care for patients during the pandemic, and will allow us to care for more patients after the pandemic has subsided.

Mission Statement

Powered by passionate volunteers, BVMI delivers free, high-quality healthcare to Bergen County's working uninsured, helping them live healthy, productive lives. By providing free healthcare to working uninsured adults in Bergen County, more people will receive primary, preventive, chronic and urgent care. This care reduces costly emergency room visits and hospital stays, prevents undiagnosed or untreated diseases from progressing, and protects the health of the community.
