About

PAINTING FOR A PURPOSE Through art, funding youth led community initiatives Painting For A Purpose celebrates the power of art to bring people together and the power of young people to change their schools and communities. We do this by- Creating a strong community of painters to share the camaraderie and fun of painting together and to have our painting serve a greater purpose and Encouraging the civic engagement of young people by supporting them in putting their good ideas into action. Painting For A Purpose brings people together to create hand painted and whimsical wooden items, to sell the art and uses the proceeds to fund youth led service learning grants for students in the Portland Public Schools in Maine. We give out grants to students of up to $500 for their projects.

We give out about 10-15 grants yearly.

Mission Statement

Prior to the pandemic, we met weekly at Portland High School to paint on Wednesday mornings.

We now meet on Zoom on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m-5:00 pm. We paint together and every other week, we learn a new design or pattern to paint. We welcome new painters who want to join us.

Besides painting, we need people interested in woodworking. We need volunteers to cut out wooden lobster shapes, birds of all shapes and sizes, tree shapes etc. We always need help cutting, routing and drilling wood for our garden totems. Check out our website to see our products.

We hope to return to PHS at some point in the future.
