About
Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nations largest organization dedicated to empowering at-risk students to stay in school and on a path to a brighter future. Working directly inside more than 2,500 schools and community sites across the country, we connect kids to caring adults and community resources designed to help them succeed in school and life. We do whatever it takes to ensure that all kids regardless of the challenges they may face have what they need to realize their full potential.
The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The objective is to prevent students from dropping out of school by giving them the tools they need to be successful. These tools include evidence-based programs and services that address the academic, non-academic, cognitive, medical, social, and emotional factors that directly impact students abilities to persist and be successful not only in school but throughout their lives.
Communities In Schools of the South Plains was chartered by the national Communities In Schools office in 1999. Since then, Communities In Schools of the South Plains has increased the number of students served from approximately 100 on three campuses to over 8,000 on 94 campuses.
Communities In Schools of the South Plains currently partners with 15 school districts to serve students through its various programs on 94 campuses throughout the South Plains. CIS-South Plains provides services in elementary, junior high, and high schools in the City of Lubbock, the greater Lubbock area (Frenship, Lubbock-Cooper, Shallowater)and throughout the South Plains (Brownfield, Dimmitt, Floydada, Hale Center, Hereford, Lamesa, New Deal, Plainview, Ralls, Tulia, Premier Charter High Schools and Triumph Charter High School).
Mission Statement
The unique CIS care model positions a Site Coordinator on-site at each CIS school campus to assess student and campus needs and deliver necessary resources. As a single point of contact, Site Coordinators are positioned to match the needs of at-risk students with community resources and to be active participants in the work of teachers and administrators in making their school a place of learning and achievement.
The Five CIS Basics:
- A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult;
- A safe place to learn and grow;
- A healthy start and a healthy future;
- A marketable skill to use upon graduation; and
- A chance to give back to their peers and community.
During the 2023-2024 school year, Communities In Schools of the South Plains served 8,627 studentsat risk of not finishing school through before, during, and after school programs. Results show that our case-managed students who receive the most intensive supports are beating the odds. Heres how:
- 100% of students stayed in school
- 100% of K-11 students were promoted to the next grade
- 100% of seniors graduated or received a GED
- 82% of students met/made progress towards attendance goals
Our programs work! However, none of it would be possible without the support of communitypartners like you. Thank you for helping us empower students to succeed!
