Destination: College

Destination: College is looking for adult volunteers for our IN-PERSON one-hour weekly academic enrichment program at Mount Vernon High School during the school year. Volunteers select a team and day that works best for their own schedule.

Volunteer ‘Academic Coaches’ work with our student-athletes in small groups to build better comprehension, think more critically, and build rapport with adults outside the classroom using print/digital articles and media content from major news and educational sources.

Volunteers can also provide subject specific assistance if they have a background or strong interest in that area. (Regents/Homework prep: Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, Biology, Physics, Chem, Global/US).

The weekly session is facilitated by a DC Program Leader and the head coach serving the full team on the assigned day. Volunteers must submit an online background check facilitated by Destination: College. If approved, proof of vaccination is required. Students may or may not be vaccinated at this time – masks are required by all participants.

Destination: College helps athletes at three under-resourced high schools in the Mount Vernon City School District achieve academic success in high school, obtain admission to a college best suited to their academic and financial needs, and persist toward the goal of a college degree.
