The Food Bank of South Jerseys humble beginnings in Camden, New Jersey is a reinforcement of what happens when ordinary citizens, driven by compassion and conviction, accomplish extraordinary feats. Founded in 1985 by 13 individuals with the belief that no one should go hungry, the Food Bank of South Jerseys mission was birthed. This simple grassroots vision from one South Jersey city has stood the test of time to become a trusted beacon of hope feeding hundreds of thousands of food-insecure residents and renewing their faith in the kindness of humanity.
Mission Statement
The Food Bank of South Jersey (FBSJ) is a nonprofit organization that provides food and essential resources to individuals and families struggling with food insecurity across four counties: Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem. Heres what they do:
- Food Distribution: FBSJ operates through a network of partner agencies, including food pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens, to deliver millions of pounds of food each year to communities in need. They also provide emergency food boxes to families and individuals facing urgent crises.
- Nutrition Education: The food bank offers programs that teach people how to eat healthily on a budget. They conduct cooking classes and workshops to educate participants about nutritious meals using affordable ingredients.
- Childrens Programs: FBSJ runs programs like the Summer Meals and After-School Meals programs, which provide nutritious food to children when school is not in session, ensuring they have access to meals during summer breaks or after school.
- Senior Support: The Senior Box Program delivers monthly boxes of food to seniors to help them maintain a balanced diet and alleviate food insecurity among the elderly.
- Disaster Relief: In times of natural disasters or emergencies, the Food Bank of South Jersey responds by distributing food and water to affected communities.
