About

Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County builds sustainable, affordable homeownership opportunities.

The focus of our mission is not simply the construction of houses, but also the development and empowerment of people and communities. Were invested in the people involved in our work: our future homeowners, those involved in the volunteer construction on those houses, financial supporters, advocates in the community, and those who engage in other ways. We seek to form partnerships among people from all walks of life and our values focus on building equity, stability, community, and legacy.

Our programs strive to create a sense of empowerment among residents, encouraging homeowners to take charge in their neighborhoods and create safe, vibrant communities they can enjoy for generations. Our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Mission Statement

All who qualify for the Habitat program do so based on the same three criteria: need for housing, ability to pay, willingness to partner. Each adult member living in a Habitat home contributes 250 hours of volunteering, called sweat equity, prior to closing on their house. This is done through homeowner education classes, volunteering at the office and Habitat ReStore, and in building their neighbor's homes, and finally their own homes.

Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, our houses are sold to future homeowners and financed with affordable loans. As the homeowners pay back their affordable mortgage, the funds are reinvested in our operations in order to offer future families an opportunity for homeownership.
