Madison Cat Project

Madison Cat Project (formerly Dane County Friends of Ferals)works to control the feral cat population, improve the lives of feral cats, and decrease the number of hard-to-adopt cats in animal shelters. Over 80% of the cats that enter our program are not actually feral, these we place in loving, indoor homes as pets. We utilize a program of targeted trap/neuter/return to work toward our goal. Some of the cats we trap can not be returned to the location of origin due to municipality restrictions. We find suitable outdoor homes which will provide shelter, daily food and water for the truly feral cats.

Madison Cat Project (formerly Dane County Friends of Ferals) was created in July of 2002 by Dr Susan Krebsbach. She wanted to help the Dane County Humane Society(DCHS) deal with the problem of feral cats, who were not suitable for adoption as pets and for which DCHS did not have a program in place.Madison Cat Project worked to find suitable rural homes and relocate the cats to these homes. Over a three year period this program was housed in the DCHS barn. In 2008,Madison Cat Project incorporated and moved to a new facility, Sly's Place, at 627 Post Road, in Madison. We are a group of dedicated volunteers committed to creating a better future for feral cats. Through targeted TNR (trap, neuter, release), we actively reduce the population size of feral cat colonies. We assist rural residents wanting to responsibly manage their barn and feral cat colonies by providing low-cost spay/neuter options. We find permanent outdoor homes with responsible caregivers for feral cats whose original habitat may be unsafe. We find loving indoor homes for cats who become tame and affectionate companions while in our care. We currently have quite a few areas in which we can use some help... -Adoption Fair help (set up, take down, talk to people) (on Saturdays) -Foster Care (foster friendlier cats) -Carestaff (clean cages, feed and water the cats and socialize as you go) -Trapping (for the adventurous type, help set up live traps in cat colonies) -Delivery (bring cats from enclosure to the vets and back again) -Veterinary Assistant(Helping the medical staff)
