MLK Leadership Academy-FUMC Tutoring Center

Thank you so much for your interest in our program! Our vision is to serve the community by providing volunteers and funds for projects that impact the learning success of children at Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Academy. The core mission of the First United Methodist Church/Martin Luther King Academy partnership is for K-2 students to learn to love learning via their one on one tutoring time. Our emphasis is on literacy.

The FUMC Tutoring Center is a volunteer based program. Volunteer tutors meet weekly with Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students to encourage reading and build loving relationships. Each Tutor works with two students separately for a half hour each during the school day. Tutoring begins in October and runs through the beginning of May. However, we take on new volunteers throughout the school year. Training for all volunteers as well as materials are provided. A background check is also required to work with students.
