About

Help children become lifelong readers by empowering communities to provide individualized instruction with measurable results.

Mission Statement

Reading Partners is dedicated to transforming struggling young readers into confident readers who are excited about learning. Reading Partners operates Reading Centers at 19 elementary schools in Washington D.C. Children reading below grade level receive free one-on-one tutoring from volunteers using a structured, research-based curriculum. Tutoring sessions focus on building students? reading skills in five critical areas of literacy. Reading Partners? curricular materials consist of three key components, each of which address different levels of reading ability with curriculum-based, logically-sequenced materials. The program has a success rate of over 80% narrowing the achievement gap by the end of the school year. Tutoring with Reading Partners requires absolutely no experience, and training and on-site staff support are provided. Our program runs Monday - Thursday, from 9am - 5 pm, and we ask volunteers to commit at least one hour per week during that timeframe. Volunteers are paired with the same student each week, so that you can see their progress throughout the semester and build a relationship with your student. We provide tutors with an easy to follow curriculum and there is a site coordinator present at each center to provide assistance.
