About
University Collections at McCalla is an accessible hub that aims to engage students, faculty, and public audiences with Indiana University's world-class collections. Indiana University is home to over 200 collections that span disciplines, time periods, and geography. These significant art, cultural, historical, and scientific collections are housed in various buildings across all nine campuses.
The primary responsibility of volunteers of University Collections at McCalla is to monitor the eight galleries and engage with the public to ensure the safety of the exhibitions. At times duties might include remaining stationed in one gallery to answer questions, direct patrons to the bathroom, or facilitate educational programs. Other duties may include roaming multiple galleries to ensure no visitors have disrupted the art and artifacts.
Our gallery space is new. Please keep in mind volunteering will likely include a significant amount of downtime while patrons discover what McCalla has to offer. There will be opportunities to facilitate events and educational programs as our gallery schedule fills up. Your day could range from directing patrons to the stairs and special exhibitions, or it could include reading up on the current exhibitions to engage with visitors even further. Our goal is to ensure your time spent volunteering is fulfilling and meaningful to you.
Please contact the Engagement Coordinator, Alisha Beard, at [email protected] for a copy of the Volunteer Handbook and full application.
Mission Statement
University Collections at McCalla serves as a gathering place where IUs collections can cross disciplinary boundaries and connect objects in new and imaginative ways. This is done through physical exhibits, digital content, classroom instruction, hands-on learning labs, and public performances in the building's Multipurpose Room.
