Urban League of Greater Madison, Inc

Founded in 1910, the National Urban League grew out of a grassroots movement for freedom and opportunity. Madison, Wisconsin joined the Urban League movement in 1968. The National Urban League, headquartered in New York City, spearheads our nonprofit, nonpartisan, community-based movement. The heart of the Urban League movement is professionally staffed affiliates in over 100 cities in 34 states and the District of Columbia.

The Urban League movement carries out its mission at the local, state and national levels through direct services, advocacy, research, policy analysis, community mobilization, collaboration and communications. Our Strategic Empowerment Agenda: Youth Education & Career Development: Building on its position as one of the largest providers of academic support and enrichment programs for struggling students, the Urban League will be expanding its youth career orientation services to make sure that all students have high aspirations for the future. Workforce Development & Home Ownership: The Urban League will be expanding its many successful job development and job training programs.

As the premier Workforce Solutions Center, the League is developing new strategic alliances with local employers to help them meet their emerging workforce needs. The League will also be expanding its home ownership and financial literacy programs. Business Development & Social Entrepreneurism: On the cutting edge of a national trend, the Urban League aims to increase access to capital and procurement opportunities for minority and urban business, and thereby create jobs in historically neglected and economically underserved urban areas. The Center will combine the Urban League's Administrative space within a facility that can accommodate our growing workforce development programs, space for retail and other small business development services including business training, counseling, financing, and procurement opportunities. Moreover, through this and other entrepreneurial ventures, the Urban League will be able to invest even more in its social mission.

The Urban League of Greater Madison's mission is to improve the social and economic conditions of African Americans, other people of color, and the disadvantaged in our community.
