About this Opportunity
Supportive Living Inc. (SLI), is redefining what it means to support individuals affected by brain injury and other neurological conditions. As a nonprofit healthcare organization, they are driven by the mission to enhance the lives of those served by providing a holistic approach to care and community.
During this opportunity, volunteers will be matched with a resident at our Douglas House in Lexington, MA. Volunteers will be spending quality time with the resident, getting to know them, playing games, taking walks, sharing stories, and connecting. Volunteers will have a meaningful impact on the community by forming genuine connections with individuals, fostering mutual aid, joy, and a stronger sense of belonging. Opportunities like this allow volunteers to engage directly with residents, build trust, and create a more connected and supportive community environment.
Residents love meeting new people and are very excited to welcome volunteers! Some residents are naturally more talkative than others, and like all of us, they have days when they feel more or less social. At times, they may simply enjoy being around people without feeling like talking. Please don’t take it personally if a resident isn’t engaging as much as you might expect. They are still happy you’re there and appreciate your presence! Feel free to share about yourself, your experiences, and whatever you’re comfortable with. A few residents may be a little harder to understand at times. It’s completely fine to ask them to repeat themselves, and if you’re still unsure or feel uncomfortable, please don’t hesitate to ask a staff member for help. Brain injury isn’t “one size fits all,” and neither are people! The way you communicate with residents will vary from person to person, and it’s completely normal if you find that a bit challenging at times. Embrace the process, as it can be a meaningful and rewarding learning experience.
IMPORTANT: Before your first volunteer visit, please email [email protected] with a few times you are available for a phone call to ensure the volunteer position is a good fit. You must complete this step before attending your first volunteer shift and cannot volunteer until you have connected with Kaela. If you do not receive a response by email, please send a text message to 339-227-9586.
