About this Opportunity

About the American Red Cross:

The Boston Food Pantry is operated by the American Red Cross of Massachusetts. Since 1982, we’ve been on a mission to help alleviate hunger and food insecurity among low-income communities throughout the Boston area at our onsite food pantry and working with agency community partners at mobile distribution sites. Our priority is to be inclusive, inviting, and barrier-free. 75% of the food distributed is fresh produce and is given with sensitivity towards sustainability and the environment. Produce not fit for distribution is saved for composting at local farms.

Volunteers will prepare food for the following day's distribution to clients. This could entail bagging frozen meat (poultry/beef/pork/fish), quality controlling produce and composting waste, assembling bags of non-perishable dry goods, and breaking down cardboard boxes and filling the dumpster. Volunteers should be able to lift 25 lbs. and stand for 3+ hours. Volunteers should dress "comfortably, but respectfully". For safety, closed-toe shoes are REQUIRED. During the colder months, please wear layers and bring a hat and gloves. Please leave valuable items at home. The Red Cross Boston Food Pantry is not responsible for lost items.

*Note: The pantry is wheelchair accessible and welcomes wheelchair users. Notice in advance is appreciated.

T-Accessible, Red Line (Andrew)
Youth Friendly, 15+. All volunteers under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult over 18 years old. All volunteers under 18 years old must bring a permission form signed by a parent or guardian to give to the Project Leader. At Boston Cares, we recognize that diversity, equity, and inclusion are fundamental values that guide our mission and work. Boston Cares is committed to creating a community where everyone is valued, respected, and can come and participate as their authentic selves. We expect that all volunteers and partners join us in promoting a safe and supportive space for everyone.
