About this Opportunity

The Richmond ToolBank is a nonprofit organization dedicated to lending tools, equipment & expertise to community-based organizations and individuals. In a region where under-resourced nonprofits and community groups often lack access to the equipment needed to tackle critical neighborhood challenges, Richmond ToolBank bridges that gap and transforms tool access into community power. Our extensive inventory features over 10,000 tools, all aimed at supporting our mission to empower ambitious goals for community initiatives and their members. ToolBank is a capacity builder and force multiplier, allowing community members to focus their energy and resources on the heart of their mission. Our mission is fueled by three major programs:

  • Tools for Change: Since opening our doors in 2015; we have supported 600+ community organizations (and thousands of individuals) in completing 20,000+ projects across Central Virginia that has culminated in over 120,000 volunteers engaged and over $10 million in retail tool savings through our lending programs.
  • Building Change: Our Building Change program is open to any group interested in giving back to our community in a totally unique way. We craft turnkey one-of-a-kind volunteer experiences that combine team building with tool training to build placemaking furniture for community organizations in need, as well as complete community projects that enrich our neighborhoods led by ToolBank expertise.
  • ToolBox: The ToolBOX Program offers a series of hands-on learning workshops focused on affordable home care & repair for individuals and groups. ToolBOX workshops helps residents gain skills, build confidence, and build equity in your home & communities.

Building Change Overview and Impact:

Building Change is Richmond ToolBank’s group volunteer program for corporate and community teams looking to give back in a truly unique way.

We design turnkey, one-of-a-kind volunteer experiences that combine team building with tool training, bringing groups together to build placemaking furniture for community organizations across the Richmond region, as well as manage community volunteer projects like tree plantings & neighborhood revitalization projects.

Our builds make a difference in every corner of Central Virginia. Recent project recipients include Henrico County Public Schools, the Boys & Girls Club, Richmond area Parks, YMCA, affordable housing organizations, and more! In 2025, we brought together nearly 1,000 community volunteers as we built lasting change for our community.

Hand-built furniture pieces include: picnic and project tables, garden beds, planters, benches, compost bins, cornhole boards, Adirondack Chairs, and more.

Sponsoring a Building Change project is a powerful investment in the people and places that make our region thrive. We have a wide range of build types to accommodate your budgetary needs.
