Board Member - Marketing or Community Organizing Skills

Brief Organizational Description: 
Start 1 Spark believes every student should have access to the extracurricular programs offered at school so they can be a part of their school community. Partnering with disadvantaged middle schools, Start 1 Spark builds a community of individuals, groups, and businesses to provide the resources necessary for every student to participate in the enriching sports, clubs, music, and the arts offered at school.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
Start 1 Spark is looking for energetic and passionate community members to join its Board of Directors. Start 1 Spark’s mission is to eliminate the financial burden of school extracurricular activities so all students can participate in their school community. This is an exciting opportunity to support local students in developing strong relationships with their peers and teachers in addition to learning life skills that will support them into adulthood. As a young organization, this is a working Board seeking members with a marketing background to help guide our communications or community organizing background to rally support. Start 1 Spark is continuing to expand in the Richmond region and is seeking Board members who can further its mission and launch a thousand sparks!

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

• Provide guidance and strategic oversight in furthering Start 1 Spark’s mission
• Ensure Start 1 Spark meets its fiduciary obligations
• Actively participate in Start 1 Spark’s fundraising plan to increase donor base and retention

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:

• Attend and participate in board meetings and special events on a regular basis
• Communicate and inform one’s network of community members, the Richmond region business, and philanthropic community of Start 1 Spark’s mission and programs
• Financially support Start 1 Spark in a manner commensurate with one’s ability
• Build working relationships with fellow Board members, staff, and volunteers that contribute to mission success
• Have a willingness and desire to support all aspects of the position!

Time Commitment:
Board members serve one-year terms which can be renewed pending approval of the Board. Regular Board meetings occur every 6-8 weeks and last an hour and a half. The Annual meeting occurs the first Monday of June. Additional responsibilities may consume approximately ten (10) hours per month.

• Interested candidates will meet with fellow Board members and Executive Director to learn what Board membership looks like
• Interested candidates will complete an application process and membership is subject to a Board vote
• New members receive a Board Book to support member's active engagement and fulfillment of responsibilities
