About this Opportunity

Brief Organizational Description:
Big Brothers Big Sisters creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose:
BBBS is seeking adult volunteers to build friendships with youth throughout Richmond and surrounding counties. Youth who receive mentoring through BBBS show academic improvements, build social and emotional skills, and decrease instances of risky behaviors. Our team thoughtfully matches volunteers (Bigs) with youth (Littles) based on shared interests and provide ongoing support to every match, from beginning to end. We have several program types to match the needs and availability of varying volunteers.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
Community-based: Mentor and build a friendship based on common interests! You and your Little will do fun things in your community like visit museums, play at the park, or go out for ice cream. (Must have driver's license and auto insurance). Meets on evenings or weekends, and scheduling is flexible. Approximately 2 hours at least twice per month.

School-based: Mentor a local student at their school. Be an additional role model to your Little while playing games, doing crafts, and more during their lunch break! Available at Blackwell, Henry L. Marsh, Ridge, Overby-Shepard, and Harry E. James Elementary Schools. Meets mid-day 1 hour per week while school is in session.

Big Futures: Meet with a high school student every other week at Richmond Technical Center to discuss their career path post-graduation. Expand opportunities as you explore together! Meets mid-day every other week while school is in session.

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:

Volunteers apply, interview, and complete references and background checks. Community-based volunteers must have a driver's license and auto insurance; school-based volunteers must have reliable transportation to the site.

Time Commitment:
BBBS will work with volunteers to identify the meeting time and program format that is the best fit for you. We ask community-based volunteers to commit to meeting with a Little for at least 12 months, and for school-based volunteers to commit to at least three semesters.
