About this Opportunity
Home fires claim seven lives every day, but you can help change that by serving on a team providing home fire education and free smoke alarm installations. Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death from home fire in half. In Tennessee alone last year, the Red Cross installed over 4,500 free smoke alarms and along with providing fire safety information, serving nearly 3,000 households. Experience a rewarding day connecting with other volunteers and the families you’ll help.
No prior experience is necessary; we will provide a brief training on the morning of the event. This is an event where friends and family can also participate.
During a Sound the Alarm Homes Made Safer Event, teams of Red Cross and Community Volunteers go through an identified neighborhood/area offering free installation of smoke alarms with a 10-year battery as well as providing/reviewing home fire and other safety checklists with residents.
The Red Cross will supply the quick training for these teams on the morning of the event, as well as the smoke detectors and education materials. Each team is comprised of 3-4 volunteers including an
- Alarm Installer
- Disaster Safety Educator to briefly review provided safety information
- Documenter/Recorder (including residents address, number of people living in that home, # of smoke alarms installed)
Community volunteers for these events allow youth participation as well:
Youth ages 13-15 may volunteer only with parent/legal guardian present.
Those 16-17 years-old require parental consent and adult supervision.
Contact the volunteer leader to complete registration online in advance or register in Hands On and arrive a few minutes early to complete registration forms.
