About this Opportunity


Camp FAVE (June 15-19 in Cypress Park and June 22-26 in Westchester)

Become a Project Leader to assist Camp FAVE directors and counselors by helping to check in/out campers to the free daily camp and also helping to verify attendance as campers travel to/from field trips.
 
Why: In order to provide this free camp, FAVE will rely on volunteers to help support camp staff so they can transition into leading camp activities.
 
Who: FAVE (Families Active in Volunteer Enrichment), a program of L.A. Works, is running a camp for children ages 7-14 in the Cypress Park neighborhood. Camp FAVE is a service leadership camp run by L.A. Works’ FAVE program to engage youth in fun and engaging service projects. Youth can spend a week doing meaningful projects across the city.
 

What to Expect:
  • There will be two shifts each day that you will be able to sign up for. Please scroll to the bottom of the page and toggle the drop-down menu to sign-up for a specific date and shift. If you have any questions please email the opportunity coordinator below.
  • As a Project Leader you may be asked to do the following tasks
    • Shift 1: 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM:
      • Set up check in table, check in campers on attendance lists, communicate with campers and parents, escort campers to activity area upon arrival, help with packing items onto buses for field trips, help line up campers to get on bus
    • Shift 2: 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM:
      • Meet LAW staff member to help set up afternoon snack area, camper check out area, refill water coolers as needed, help unload buses and escort campers to afternoon activity area
    • Dates:
      *The following dates and shifts are available. Please note that we have one camp location at the Los Angeles River Center (Northeast LA) for dates from June 15-19 and a different location at Loyola Marymount University (Westchester) from June 22-26.

      Week 2 Camp: Loyola Marymount University
      Monday, June 22nd 8-10 am

      Wednesday, June 24th 8-10 am

  • Other tasks you may be asked to do are the following:
    • Administrative tasks including checking in/out campers in the morning and the afternoon
    • Attendance as campers board buses for morning activities and return to the camp location in the afternoon
    • Set up attendance table at beginning of shift
    • Interact with parents and answer general questions about the daily camp schedule/ field trips
    • Direct campers to their counselor group
    • Advise campers to drop off their bags/lunchboxes in designated drop zone
    • Help contact any “no show” campers via phone as part of attendance each day
    • Help set up some small craft activities or games
    • Help board campers onto field trip bus
    • Breakdown attendance table at end of shift
    • Check out campers with parents at
    • Breakdown attendance table at end of shift
What’s Required:
  • No advanced training required
  • Volunteers will have a chair available so they may sit if they cannot stand for the duration of the shift
  • Interpersonal skills required for communicating with campers and parents
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs is preferred, but NOT required.
  • Volunteers should wear their RSVP shirt or L.A. Works shirt if they have one.
  • Exact location and other details will be emailed to all registered volunteers.
  • Parking is free in both locations and instructions for parking location will be emailed upon sign-up.
