About this Opportunity

Join the City of Richmond, Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities' Cemetery Division for a weekend workday at Maury and Mt. Olivet Cemeteries.  Maury and Mount Olivet Cemeteries, established in 1874, together cover 90 acres and reflect Richmond’s evolving burial traditions. With grave markers dating back to 1847 and sections created for African American families through the naming of Mount Olivet in 1910, these cemeteries offer volunteers an opportunity to help preserve a vital part of the city’s shared history. Volunteers are needed to assist with completing string weeding, cleaning grave markers, clearing sidewalks, removing debris and brush, and removing non-compliant flower arrangements in accordance with city codes and ordinances.

Tools and gloves will be provided. We recommend wearing a hat, long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy shoes.  Sunglasses and sunscreen are also recommended. Volunteers are asked to bring water bottles and snacks. Children are welcome, provided an adult is present to supervise them.

WHERE: Maury & Mt. Olivet Cemeteries - 2700 Maury Street, Richmond, VA 23224. Volunteers will meet at Maury Cemetery.  After turning onto Maury Street from Commerce Road, turn left into the entrance of Maury Cemetery.  Please park along the road, leaving enough room for other cars to pass.  We will have a sign-in table near the entrance.  Please be sure to stop and sign in, even if you've volunteered with us before.
