Brief Organizational Description: 

Virginia State University’s Office of Community Engagement fosters active participation in service and volunteerism as an integral part of student development outside of the classroom. Through community service, students gain real-world experience and practice important skills like leadership, problem-solving, and time-management. Volunteering offers students the opportunity to apply their classroom learning to practical scenarios that have real implications.The Office of Community Engagement at Virginia State University, in collaboration with seven dedicated student leaders from the inaugural Billy Taylor Alternative Spring Break Experience, is hosting a supply donation drive to support the Appalachian Community Resource Center (ACRC) in Black Mountain, North Carolina. It is our intent to fill one of our Virginia State University passenger van full with supplies and then transport those items to the Appalachian Community Resource Center in June. 

Volunteer Position Description and Purpose

We are looking for passionate and community-minded volunteers to host individual donation drives throughout the month of April in support of families served by the Appalachian Community Resource Center (ACRC). Volunteers will collect and purchase needed items identified on the ACRC's donation needs list. Once your drive is complete, we invite you to bring your collected donations to Virginia State University’s Multipurpose Center on May 10th between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, where items will be loaded into a van for delivery to ACRC. 

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review the donation needs list provided by ACRC (Current Donation Needs | Support Appalachian Families in Crisis).
  • Host a donation drive and collect items to from the donation list. 
  • Purchase any number of items from the list based on your ability.
  • Bring your donations to the VSU Multipurpose Center at Virginia State University located at 20809 2nd Ave, Petersburg, VA 23803 on Friday, May 10th, between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.

Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements

  • No specific qualifications or background checks are required.
  • Volunteers should have access to transportation and the ability to purchase and deliver items.
  • A commitment to supporting community outreach and social impact is encouraged.

Time Commitment

  • Volunteers are only required to drop off donations between 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM on May 10th.
  • The process should take no more than 15-30 minutes, including check-in and drop-off.

 

Other Information

Volunteer Hour Verification:

  • Hours will be verified on-site via a digital check-in system or by signing a printed volunteer log. Please request a verification form if needed for school or organization credit.

Orientation or Training:

  • No orientation is necessary. Volunteers will receive a confirmation email with all necessary instructions upon signing up.

What to Bring:

  • Your purchased donation items.
  • Optional: Volunteer verification form if you need documentation of service.

Special Instructions:

  • Donations must be new and unopened.
