GARDEN: Butterfly Gardening @ Deering Estate

Located along the edge of Biscayne Bay, the 444-acre Deering Estate is an environmental, archaeological and historic preserve that offers unique opportunities to experience Florida's natural resources. Visitors enjoy daily tours of historic homes, hikes through the lush natural areas, opportunities to examine fossils and tools left behind by pre-historic humans, and much more. The Deering Estate is a cultural and educational facility that offers classes and programs for children and adults, as well as rental space for special social functions. The Estate is part of the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, which manages the property on behalf of the State of Florida. HandsOn Miami volunteers will help maintain the beautiful butterfly gardens at Deering Estate and remove unwanted exotic plants. They will also learn to identify caterpillar and butterfly species and their host and larval plants, participate in butterfly counts and document what they see during the volunteer project.

Need to know:

• Volunteers must bring their own work/gardening gloves to ensure their hands are covered and protected.
• Please do NOT attend if you are exhibiting any of the following symptoms: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, loss of sense of smell, fatigue, etc.
