Teachers Assistant

Job Summary

Volunteer teachers assistants for YMCA International Services will work with teaching staff to facilitate classroom activities and participation. A teachers aid will work one-on-one with students to help them understand complex topics. The volunteer will help the teacher with any classroom needs not limited to grading, copying, conducting classroom activities, etc.Civics and Literacy Teachers assistants help prepare clientswith reading comprehension and the citizenship exam.

Qualifications:

• A strong desire to assist in the educational achievement of refugees and immigrants in the Houston Area
• Sensitivity to cultural differences
• Patience, understanding, flexibility, and a positive attitude
• Ability to serve for2-5 hours per week for a minimum of a month

Responsibilities

• Complete required training and YMCA Background check
• Assist teachers in classroom related matters
• Be consistent in attendance
• Be punctual (5-10 minutes early)
• Notify teacher if you will be unable to attend scheduled classes
• Provide regular feedback to teacher regarding student progress
• Record hours
• Communicate any personal needs or concerns to YMCA staff in a timely and appropriate fashion
