About this Opportunity

Overview:

The Allen C. Haskell Park seeks volunteers to maintain the grounds of the park and assist the Superintendent in curatorial duties. Volunteers will be working one-day a week to continue Allen Haskells vision and passion for botanical cultivation. This is a hands-in-the-dirt opportunity that is also focused on growing the volunteers skills as well as the flowers. Successful volunteers are friendly, enthusiastic, willing to learn on the job, reliable, and good representatives of the Trustees of the Reservations.

Responsibilities:

  • Garden maintenance including: weeding, staking, pruning, mulching, raking, edging trails, and planting.
  • Work with hand tools to maintain landscapes and flower beds.
  • Assist the Superintendent with plant classification and cataloging as well as documenting historical aspects of the park.
  • Option to assist at various year-round events for the public.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with perennial and tree identification desired, but not required.
  • Basic gardening experience preferred.
  • Interest in learning advance techniques of pruning and cultivation.
  • Able to handle physical nature of gardening, such as lifting, kneeling, walking over uneven ground, and work with hand tools.
  • Good work ethic.

Time Commitment:

One set day a week from March to December.

We rely on our horticulture volunteers to help open the garden up during the busy spring season, while summer slows down a bit in the garden the weeds continue to grow and the fall season brings us leaves to rake up. Ideal candidates would be able to commit to a consistent weekly schedule.

Volunteers are an integral part of the Trustees and every property relies heavily on them. The staff at the Haskell Park is dedicated to giving volunteers the opportunity to learn, grow as individuals, find others with similar interests, help beautify a local setting, and contribute to the legacy of a world-renown horticulturalist, Allen C. Haskell. As one of the newest Trustees properties, volunteers will play a vital role in the future of this budding park.
