About this Opportunity

Retired? What can you do now to make a difference? Raise a puppy, Change a life! We are seeking patient, caring volunteers with free time to raise a Guide or Service Dog puppy. Our puppies are extraordinary; all they need is your help so they can take the next step! By joining our community of volunteer puppy raisers, you can make a difference in someone’s life. Training, equipment, and resources are provided; your only cost is the price of food. You will teach the puppy house manners, house breaking and socialize the pup as they travel with you to stores, restaurants, trains, buses, ferries and more! There’s also the option to share the responsibility with another family. After approximately 14 months, the puppy returns to our facility for advanced training. If interested, please contact us at 631-930-9000 Extension 1254.

Upon completing their training, our dogs provide an unparalleled sense of independence for our graduates, assisting with safe passage across many distances, from a trip to their mailbox all the way to another country. Your retirement is a special time to be spent as you wish. This is your opportunity to give back to your community as you desire. As you begin this exciting part of your life, please consider becoming a puppy raiser. Our puppy raisers tell us they get more out of this experience than they ever anticipated. We’re sure that you will too!

Since 1946, the Guide Dog Foundation has trained and placed guide and service dogs to provide independence, enhanced mobility and companionship to people who are blind, visually impaired or have other special needs. The dogs are provided to the handlers free of charge. We rely on the contributions of generous individuals, corporations, service clubs and foundations to fund our mission. Thank you for taking the time to read about our non-profit. We hope to meet you soon.
