About this Opportunity
The Spanish Translator/Proofreader volunteer will be primarily focused on working closely with the Multicultural Communications Team to translate and review written materials from English into Spanish. Volunteers play a key role in ensuring that all Spanish-language content is clear, accurate, culturally appropriate, and aligned with American Red Cross terminology, style, and messaging guidelines.
Job Description: Post-edit machine-translated materials to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency with the original meaning and tone. Translate or proofread internal and external documents as needed, on an on-call basis. Use computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools to ensure consistency and efficiency across projects. Follow American Red Cross terminology, style, and translation guidelines. Collaborate with subject matter experts to accurately translate specialized content. Incorporate feedback from reviewers into your own translations to improve quality, ensure consistency, and support continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications: Major in linguistics, translation, language studies, Spanish philology, or interpretation (preferred). If from a different field, provide proof of equivalent education and experience (certification or portfolio required). Native Spanish speaker with excellent English skills. Proven experience translating from English to Spanish (portfolio recommended). Strong proofreading and writing skills in both Spanish and English. Detail-oriented with the ability to spot grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, and style errors. Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word and Excel). Must have a phone, computer, and reliable internet.
Applicants must provide documented evidence of meeting at least one of the following criteria: Major in linguistics, translation, language studies, Spanish philology, or interpretation (preferred). Two years of full-time professional translation experience and an accredited higher education degree in another field or at least five years of full-time professional translation experience.
Applicants must demonstrate the following competences: Translation competence. Linguistic and textual competence in both the source and target languages. Research and information acquisition competence. Cultural, technical and domain competences.
To verify these competences, the interview process includes a practical evaluation consisting of three tasks: Writing samples, translation and proofreading. Each task is assessed using a standardized framework.
Additional Requirements: Strong computer skills, including advanced knowledge and command of Microsoft Word. Reliable access to resources needed to volunteer 100% virtually, including access to a computer, internet, and phone. Submission of resume. Must be at least 18 years of age. Willingness to comply with current public health and American Red Cross policies.
