About this Opportunity
Purpose:
LSI's Senior Immigrant and Refugee Program serves people over the age of 60 working towards their citizenship with extra support to foster community connections, improve quality of life, and work towards the goal of US citizenship. Volunteers lead and support in classes focused on English and Citizenship to support participants towards those goals. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, participants meet at the Polk County Central Senior Center for supplemental activities like art, tai chi, and tutoring to supplement Monday/Wednesday class offerings and support socialization.
Key responsibilities
- Lead teacher develops lesson plans and assistant teacher supports in administering their lessons in a variety of ways including but not limited to participating in demonstrations, leading activities in small groups, and working one-on-one with individual students
- Communicate respectfully with students when engaging in repeat activities and topics to give students an opportunity to master the content
Adjust plans, techniques, and/or approaches to meet the learning styles of the students and follow the instruction of the ESL Activities Specialist with the ultimate goal of helping students become independent learners
Time commitment
- Monday and Wednesday classes meet at LSI's 3200 University Ave building from 10-12pm. Lead and substitute teachers needed
- Tuesday and Thursday activities meet from about 9-11am at Polk County Central Senior Center. Volunteers can either "float" and support as needed or lead a specific activity related to your skill or interest (ex: yoga, crafts, billiards)
- Volunteers make a weekly commitment to one day per week with option to come multiple days for those who are interested
