About this Opportunity

The Building Code Advisory and Appeal Board is seeking committed and qualified individuals to serve as board members. The board's primary purpose is to review proposed code adoptions and amendments for recommendation to the city council and to function as an appeal body for the decisions of the code official. Board members will be responsible for ensuring that construction and building practices in the city adhere to the applicable codes and regulations, promoting safety, and considering appeals from individuals affected by code decisions.

Qualifications:

  • Residency: Must be a resident of the city of Dubuque.
  • Age: Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • Expertise: Board members must possess specialized knowledge and qualifications in one of the following areas:
  • - Residential construction professional

    - Commercial construction professional

    - Electrical construction professional

    - Plumbing construction professional

    - HVAC construction professional

    - Multi-disciplinary representation (architect, engineer, building designer, or general construction professional)

  • Professional Experience: Demonstrated experience in the relevant area of expertise, preferably with a track record of excellence and integrity in the construction industry.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, as board members will be required to articulate their positions clearly and contribute effectively to discussions.
  • Impartiality: The ability to remain impartial and fair when considering appeals and code adoption decisions, free from undue influence or bias.
  • Commitment: Willingness to dedicate time to attend board meetings and actively participate in its activities, including attending appeal hearings when necessary.
  • Oath of Office: Must be willing to execute an oath of office, affirming their commitment to uphold the responsibilities and duties of the board with honesty and integrity.
