About this Opportunity

Help people in your local community by volunteering as a conservator!

The Department of Human Services is currently in need of volunteers to serve as conservators for wards of the state. Wards of the state are typically individuals with mental illness, disabilities, or dementia. Often, family members of the ward are not able to serve as conservator, and we look to caring community members for help.

This is a rewarding position for those who enjoy using their skills with accounting, real estate, taxes, etc. Conservatorswork with professionals from DHS and other services agencies to handle matters such as paying bills, settling outstanding debts, selling, leasing, mortgaging property, investing funds or filing taxes for wards who may be moving to a nursing facility, or perhaps a young person who is unable to make good decisions on his or her own. Conservators also make a brief yearly report to the court. Complex decisions may require the approval of a Judge. Conservators make a big difference for some of our community's most needy individuals!
