About this Opportunity

City Year believes in the power of young people.

We know that all students can succeed. But, many students growing up in low-income communities face adversity that affects their ability to come to school every day, ready to learn.

City Year places teams of AmeriCorps members in high-need schools full-time, alongside teachers, to provide individualized academic and social emotional supports to help students thrive and to improve the school-wide learning environment.

City Years Seattle / King County site currently serves over 4600 students in 10 elementary and middle schools around South Seattle.

What is the mission of City Years Site Board?

The mission of a City Year site board is to serve as a highly-engaged and deeply-committed team of volunteer leaders who tap their collective wisdom, resources, and experiences to enable City Year to achieve impact, scale, and success in their community.

What makes the City Year Seattle / King County Board an attractive opportunity?

First and foremost, impact. You will have an opportunity to engage and make a difference in thousands of lives across multiple generations of leaders locally and nationally: Board, staff, AmeriCorps members, students, champions, and partners. Your leadership will be a driving force in helping students stay in school and on track to graduate college - and be career ready. Second, you will have access to a broad, local and national professional network through City Years corporate, civic, and private partners, 28 peer site boards, and the national board of trustees. Third, youll have the pride of serving with an organization with strong values and a program backed by research, community support, and results. Youll also have a lot of fun along the way!

What are the core roles of a City Year Site Board member?

Were looking for leaders who want to make a difference in our communities, and are working to build a Board that is as diverse as the communities we serve.

It is important to clarify CYSKCs site board is advisory in nature. That means although site boards play an important role in building the organization locally and nationally, they do not have formal legal authority or fiduciary responsibilities.

We understand that City Year is one part of your life so we work to create individually sustainable engagement plans so members can easily balance professional and personal commitments. There are many ways you can impact City Years mission and success as a board member; however, here are three key ways we ask each board member to apply their expertise, leadership, and time:

  • Personal Connection:Develop an understanding of the mission, vision, strategies, and impact of City Year, both nationally and locally. You will receive onboarding support and any materials or experiences you need to build and strengthen this bond.
  • Engagement:Prepare and engage in site board meetings (every-other-month) to provide input on site strategy, plans, and challenges. Actively participate in key CYSKC events throughout the year.
  • Advocacy & Fundraising:Prioritize City Year as one of you top three philanthropic investments. Be bold and proud in advocating for City Year within your personal and professional networks and with prospective champions and partners (staff provides all supporting coaching, messaging and materials).
