About this Opportunity

Description of Position:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate intern to assist with social services intake paperwork and provide support to clients shopping in our food shelf. This position will provide hands-on experience in the non-profit sector, offering an opportunity to make a direct impact on individuals and families in need. Spanish-speaking skills are highly desirable for this role, as we serve a diverse population, including many Spanish-speaking clients. Please note this is an unpaid volunteer position.


Specific Duties:

  • Assist clients in completing social services intake paperwork, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Support clients while they shop in the food shelf, helping them choose appropriate items based on dietary needs and family size.
  • Provide a welcoming and respectful environment for all clients.
  • Work closely with social service staff to coordinate appointments and services for clients.
  • Organize and stock food shelf items, ensuring the space is clean, safe, and well-maintained.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, including those who speak Spanish, to answer questions and provide guidance.
  • Assist with data entry and maintaining accurate client records as needed.


Qualifications Sought:

  • Ability to work compassionately with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and record-keeping.
  • Fluency in Spanish is highly desirable but not required.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to adhere to policies and practices of The Salvation Army

Screening, Training, and Evaluation Plan:

  • Screening: Complete volunteer application, background check, and interview
  • Training: Orientation and training provided at start of the internship; Safe From Harm risk management training is required within the first 30 days of service.
  • Evaluation: Ongoing feedback will be provided by the food shelf supervisor, in addition to completing any required written course evaluations.


ScheduleFlexible scheduling. 10-15 hours a week, Monday-Friday, between the hours of 9:00-4:00


Length of Commitment: 3-month commitment or greater preferred.
