About this Opportunity
The MIND Volunteer Program is designed to proactively address common symptoms and concerns that complicate care and discharge planning for our hospitalized patients. The goal is to prevent patients from experiencing a decline in both their physical and mental health during their hospital stay.
Volunteers are an important part of the care team - making visits to patients, providing companionship, assisting with meals, playing games, engaging in a variety of social activities as well as simple conversation, all of which can stimulate the mind and reduce delirium.
Is this role a fit for you?
- Volunteers must enjoy working with elderly people
- Able to commit to at least 3 shifts/month for 6 months
- Shift times can be flexible; generally 3 hour shifts afternoons or evenings
- Terrific opportunity for someone wanting a meaningful volunteer experience or someone working toward a medical career hoping to gain one-to-one patient interaction
New Volunteers will receive training from unit staff about delirium and activities to engage with patients
Note: Delirium is the sudden onset of severe confusion and is a preventable condition in many instances. It can have serious complications and may result in a loss of ability for self-care and independence.
