About this Opportunity

Vicksburg National Military Park is seeking volunteers to participate in an Adopt-A-Trail Program and will hold an information session and orientation on June 3rd in honor of National Trails Day. Volunteers will learn about the details of the Adopt-A-Trail program and the Al Scheller Hiking Trail, have the opportunity to officially sign up and adopt a section of the trail, and participate in an orientation about how to perform trail maintenance.  Those interested in attending should RSVP to the volunteer coordinator, Molly, at [email protected] or by calling (601) 629-8133.

Those who do decide to participate in the Adopt-A-Trail program will be responsible for maintaining a section of the trail. They’ll sign a volunteer agreement and an Adopt-A-Trail agreement, participate in an orientation (one will be offered on June 3rd following the information session), and then be able to schedule their own trail maintenance work days whenever is convenient for their group.

“We are excited to launch this new program” said Superintendent Bill Justice. “The Adopt-A-Trail program aims to ensure more regular trail maintenance, encourage a sense of pride and ownership for the park within program participants, and raise awareness of the Al Scheller Hiking Trail.”

The Al Scheller Hiking Trail is a primitive trail that was established in 1979 by Ranger Al Scheller to provide Scouts with a unique experience and better understanding of the siege of Vicksburg. Since then, the trail has been hiked by countless Scouts and members of the general public.
