Bark Ranger

Bark Rangers walk their dogs in Stones River National Battlefield to assist ranger staff roving the trails and park sites. Bark Ranger volunteers meet and greet the public, provide information, and notify park staff of emergency or unusual situations as needed. Volunteers will communicate with the visitor center through a park radio or personal cell phone. Volunteers complete roving reports and statistics at the end of each shift.

Responsibilities:

Develop knowledge of park resources; know park regulations and NPS policies; communicate effectively by park radio; complete reports on the same day as the rove; be in proper uniform.

Brief Description of Work to be Performed:

Work will include greeting visitors, providing orientation, and providing informal interpretation. Volunteers will inform visitors of park regulations when appropriate.

Length of Commitment:

Volunteers will work a minimum of two days a week for a minimum of eight weeks. Volunteers will work varied schedules.

Tools, Equipment, and Vehicles to be Operated:

• No vehicles will be operated within the scope of the position.

• Park radio when available.

Location Where Work Will Be Performed:

All Stones River National Battlefield sites with the exception of the Stones River National Cemetery

Requirements of Work:

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to handle stressful situations in a professional manner
• Ability to work independently
• General knowledge of the Civil War and the Battle of Stones River (training provided)
• Must be able to walk four miles
• Dog must be friendly toward other pets and strangers including children
