About this Opportunity

Foster Grandparents (FGs) are people age 55+ who generously donate their time to mentor/tutor children in schools, daycare centers, after school/summer programs and in Head Start. FGs come from all walks of life with diverse work experiences.

FGs serve 15-30 hours/week, working to help children achieve success academically, socially and developmentally. They are the classroom grandparents who are there to provide additional support to struggling students.

The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is a Senior Corps volunteer program through the Corporation for National and Community Service. The FGP is funded through a federal grant with matching funds from a sponsor. Our program is sponsored by the Region IV Area Agency on Aging. Our program serves Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties. We strive to provide a rewarding volunteer opportunity for our Foster Grandparents, who make a measurable difference with the students they serve.

FGs who are income eligible receive a nominal federal stipend plus program benefits. FG are required to pass three state and federal (FBI) background checks. FGs must attend pre-service orientation, monthly in-service meetings and other trainings.
