About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, creative expression, and technology-driven initiatives, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces for young people to thrive.

The MAP Animation Studio brings creative storytelling and design directly into schools. Volunteers introduce students to the world of 2D/3D animation, motion graphics, and storytelling, inspiring the next generation of artists, designers, and creative thinkers.

Role Overview

We are seeking Volunteer School Outreach Instructors for MAP Animation Studio. In this role, you will visit schools and lead workshops that teach students the fundamentals of animation and visual storytelling. Volunteers will guide students through hands-on activities, spark curiosity, and show how creativity can be a tool for self-expression and empowerment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Visit schools and facilitate workshops in 2D/3D animation, motion graphics, or storytelling
  • Deliver age-appropriate, engaging lessons tailored to K–12 students
  • Collaborate with teachers and school staff to adapt content to classroom needs
  • Introduce students to animation tools and creative problem-solving
  • Serve as a mentor, encouraging confidence, teamwork, and creativity
  • Support MAP’s mission of using art and technology to uplift underserved youth

Qualifications

  • Experience or strong interest in animation, motion graphics, or storytelling
  • Passion for teaching, mentorship, and youth engagement
  • Strong communication and classroom management skills
  • Ability to simplify technical concepts for young learners
  • Prior teaching, tutoring, or workshop facilitation experience (preferred but not required)
  • Commitment to cultural sensitivity and equity in education

Commitment

  • Volunteer role, approximately 5–10 hours per week (school visits + prep time)
  • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
  • In-person delivery at New York City schools (remote prep and planning possible)
