February into November, hours taper in portions of the season
Working as part of a tight-knit team, the Community Gardens Assistant nurtures various community gardens, fostering each to be beautiful learning, growing space for all who use it. This position assists in the stewardship and operations of our gardens ensuring that they are welcoming, functional places for our gardeners to grow.
DUTIES:
Existing Garden Stewardship
- Maintain and improve existing garden infrastructure and facilities to allow gardeners to utilize the space for maximum utility and inspiration.
- Ensure regular maintenance at the community garden sites including mowing, weed whacking, irrigation, and weeding common areas.
- Prepare garden plots, community spaces, and tools for gardeners, incorporating garden Leadership Committee members, volunteers, and staff in this effort.
- Assist Leadership Committees in identifying and responding to plot abandonments and neglect.
- Maintain tools, irrigation systems, and general garden appearance to community garden standards and to ensure safety at sites.
- Train garden leadership Committee Members on maintenance activities.
Community Gardens
What it is: Outside the typical community garden model, our community gardens are planted and maintained by Community Garden staff and grow food for the community residents and farmers' markets. In addition, the garden provides respite for seniors, lifestyle change program participants and certain public school students.
- Implement a planting plan from seed to harvest at the Community Gardens each season using sustainable methods.
- Help coordinate Community Garden staff and volunteers to help tend and harvest the garden throughout the season.
- Participate as a member of the team that coordinates education and outreach efforts with the Health & Wellness team.
- Maintain site to be as a welcoming and therapeutic place for all visitors, Health & Wellness staff, and lifestyle change program participants.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and to work outdoors for extended lengths of time
and all weather conditions.
