About this Opportunity
This program is designed for volunteers to teach math lessons in primary and Junior high schools in rural and semi-rural communities in Ghana based on the Ghana Education Curriculum. This program is suitable for students, volunteers, solo travelers, career breakers, gap years and participants from all over the world.
This curriculum is designed to help children:
Develop basic ideas of quantity and space.
Use basic mathematics and necessary strategies for solving problems encountered in daily lives by recognizing relationships between numbers.
Communicate effectively using mathematics terms and symbols.
Use appropriate instruments for various systems of measurement.
Reason logically by selecting and applying criteria for clarification and generalization.
As a math teaching volunteer, you will provide an engaging classroom within a multi-cultural and community-centered environment for learning and growing with children. Volunteers will provide instructions on an array of math-related subjects to students.
There is no specific qualification related to join the project. Volunteers should be enthusiastic, reliable, flexible, patient, understand and passion for teaching and caring for children. Volunteers must also respect the locals and the host organizations, along with their rules and projects. Those who have prior teaching experience may be able to take on a more independent role to teach and lead classes with limited resources. You should keep a flexible attitude towards working in a new and multi-cultural environment.
Teaching project supplies
Picture books, instruments or other teaching materials related to your subject such as pens, pencils, color pens, novels, games, stickers, crayons, exercise books, story books, chalk, abacus for counting, marker pens, skipping ropes, used laptops, tablets etc.
This project is a year-round program and available in both rural and semi-rural communities in Ghana.
Volunteer requirement
Volunteers on this program must be 18 years and above on the program start date and duration.
Volunteers on this program must be fluent in English or basic to be able to communicate with the local people and must come along with bundle of energy.
Volunteers on this program must have at least a high school educational background.
No prior requirement is required for this program.
Volunteers must be able to adapt to the environment and be flexible to learn and experience the culture in Ghana.
