About this Opportunity

The Disaster Health Services Associate provides healthcare and first-aid for clients, and in some cases, staff. Additionally, this role assesses for and responds to public health issues in Red Cross service delivery sites.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess and triage the health needs of the shelter population - at the time of registration and on an on-going basis.
  • Evaluate and treat client's illnesses and/or injuries per past history utilizing the ARC Health
  • Services Protocols as a guideline.
  • Immediately refer critical illness or injury to a higher level of care - i.e. Emergency Medical System (EMS).
  • Document appropriately in accordance with HIPAA guidelines to ensure client confidentiality.
  • Monitor shelter clients and staff for disease outbreaks and report to public health through Health Services Supervisor.
  • Consider if current housing or shelter is appropriate for client's required level of care.
  • Make appropriate community referrals.
  • Refer individuals with mental or emotional health issues to Disaster Mental Health workers.
  • Ensure ongoing sanitary conditions of restrooms, food service, and healthcare areas. Ensure the security of all medical supplies and equipment.
  • Inform the facility manager of any safety hazards or sanitation problems.
  • Arrange for replacement of emergency medication for disaster-related health needs of shelter residents in accordance with ARC regulations & policies.

Time Commitment: Flexible. Works with the Disaster Action Team (DAT) participating in an on-call system.

Qualifications:

Fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and submission of vaccine status and supporting documentation in Volunteer Connection if participating in in-person activities and/or performing work in a Red Cross facility.

  • Attendance in volunteer orientation and completion of all required forms (volunteer and DSHR* applications) and clear background check. * DSHR- It is a requirement for all
  • Disaster and Client Services volunteers to register in the ARC Disaster Services Human Resource system to track all trained disaster services volunteers.
  • Must be a Healthcare Professional with an unencumbered license or certification from an issuing authority in one of the following disciplines:
  • Physician (MD / DO)
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
  • Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT-B)
  • Paramedics (EMT-P)
  • Physician Assistants (PA)
  • Allied Health Workers (Case by Case Basis)
  • Must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic First Aid by either the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Note: Red Cross CPR and First Aid classes are free for volunteers
