VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Overview

Believe in Me is on the lookout for a dedicated Volunteer Accessibility Specialist to join our dynamic team, working on the "1st Gen College Hub" project. This role is crucial in ensuring our web and mobile platform is accessible to all students, including those with disabilities. By integrating best practices in accessibility, you will help create an inclusive environment that empowers every first-generation college student to navigate college preparation with confidence and ease.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accessibility Auditing: Conduct thorough accessibility audits of the web and mobile platform to identify potential barriers for users with disabilities.
  • Implementation Guidance: Work closely with the Web Application Developer team to implement accessibility features, ensuring compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA standards and other relevant guidelines.
  • User Testing and Feedback: Coordinate with users with disabilities to conduct testing sessions, gathering feedback to continuously improve accessibility.
  • Training and Advocacy: Provide training and resources to the project team on accessibility best practices, fostering an inclusive development culture.
  • Tool and Resource Selection: Recommend and implement tools, libraries, and resources that enhance the platform's accessibility.
  • Accessibility Documentation: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation on accessibility implementations, guidelines, and user guides for both the development team and users.
Qualifications
  • Experience in Accessibility: Proven track record of working on accessibility in web or mobile applications, with a strong understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG, ARIA).
  • Technical Skills: Familiarity with front-end development languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and frameworks (React, Angular, Vue) used in making web applications accessible.
  • Problem-Solving: Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to address accessibility barriers creatively.
  • Communication: Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with developers, designers, and users, advocating for accessibility best practices.
  • Attention to Detail: High attention to detail, ensuring all aspects of the application are accessible to users with various disabilities.
  • Commitment to Inclusion: A passion for making education technology inclusive, aligning with the mission of supporting first-generation college students.
