About this Opportunity
Do you have two hands, one that can help a person who is legally blind and working through other issues?
You don’t need to be a mental health professional or even a nurse or social worker; just someone who can understand and be patient and tolerant when their friend has an off day, requires repetition, needs reassurance or has difficulty with comprehension or memory.
Services for the Blind has several clients who are legally blind and have additional concerns beyond blindness.
Some may have brain injury, developmental disabilities, learning or autism spectrum disorders, hearing impairments, anxiety or other special needs. They could use a big brother, sister or special friend to lend a hand or two.
The tasks would include working with clients on an ongoing basis to assist with various vision dependent needs such as grocery shopping, getting to medical appointments, forms for entitlement redetermination, housing issues, social needs, reading and sorting mail, etc.
These individuals want to be socially active while they work to maintain independent living for themselves in the community. They will achieve and maintain stability if given appropriate friendship and guidance. Can you be their friend.
