About this Opportunity

Take a Real Difference with Your Tech Skills

WeAFAR is a newly formed nonprofit with a big mission and a tiny budget: supporting people impacted by scams and financial fraud as they rebuild their lives and seek justice.

Why This Matters:

Scams and financial fraud leave victims vulnerable, overwhelmed, and often unsure how to recover. Most survivors are not tech-savvy and were deliberately misled, making practical, hands-on support essential.

Volunteers help survivors secure their digital lives, assist with reporting scams to appropriate authorities, and create clear, safe recovery procedures. By documenting technical scam data and analyzing threats, volunteers also contribute to preventing future scams and protecting vulnerable communities.

What You'll Do:

  • Help survivors secure their digital lives and recover compromised accounts

  • Assist victims in reporting scams to law enforcement or regulatory agencies

  • Build step-by-step recovery guides for future victims

  • Support community protection through practical, accessible education and webinars

  • Research and investigate the digital infrastructure of scams to strengthen prevention and awareness

  • Manage weAFAR’s cloud-based resources and provide security awareness guidance for internal systems and materials

Your expertise will directly empower people to regain control and prevent further harm.

⚠️ A Note on Fit:

WeAFAR’s mission is very focused on exposing financial fraud, supporting victims, and driving systemic change. In the past, some applicants pursued the role primarily for résumé-building, visa, or internships. While we respect those goals, this volunteer role is best for someone deeply aligned with our mission. If that describes you, we’d love to hear from you.

Ideal candidates:

  • F-1 OPT students seeking qualifying volunteer opportunities

  • Tech enthusiasts with interest in fraud prevention and community safety

  • Experienced professionals willing to share skills for social impact

Location Note:

  • Direct victim support is limited to US-based volunteers due to legal, privacy, and logistical reasons.

  • Volunteers contributing to SOPs, educational webinars, or research may participate remotely from other locations.

Time Commitment:

Flexible; estimated 3-6 hours per week, depending on tasks and volunteer availability.

Desired Skills (across the team, not necessarily all in one person):

  • Digital Forensics (for scam investigation)

  • Ethical Hacking (bonus for understanding scam infrastructure)

  • Cybersecurity / Network Security / Security & Privacy

  • Software Development / App Development / IT Infrastructure

  • AI / Data Analysis (threat detection, analyzing scam patterns, automating processes)

  • Software Troubleshooting / Technical Support

  • Communication with empathy (explaining technical guidance clearly to victims)

Note: Volunteers are not expected to possess all these skills individually. Our team is collaborative, combining expertise across these areas to support weAFAR’s mission.

If you’ve got cybersecurity or tech skills and want to make a real difference, we’d be grateful to have you on board!
