About this Opportunity
What is Betty's JA BizTown?
JA BizTown, a signature program by Junior Achievement designed to teach elementary and middle school students about work readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship through a hands-on, simulated town experience.
Here's what JA BizTown typically involves:
Students role-play as adults in various jobs (mayor, bank teller, CEO, business owner, etc.).
They run a simulated economy: earn paychecks, manage budgets, pay taxes, and interact with businesses.
It combines in-class learning with a real-world simulation, helping students connect academic concepts with real-life applications.
What Volunteers Do at JA BizTown?
Volunteers are essential to the JA BizTown experience. You will help guide students as they take on real-world roles in a simulated town. Here's what you can expect to do during your volunteer shift:
Mentor and guide students
You will be assigned to a business within BizTown and will work with a small group of students. Your role is to help them understand their job responsibilities, stay on task, and manage their time throughout the day.
Support business operations
Assist students as they run their business, which may include helping them with tasks like managing their budget, writing checks, making bank deposits, and serving customers.
Encourage problem-solving and teamwork
As questions or challenges arise, you'll help students think through solutions and work together as a team to keep their business running smoothly.
Model professional behavior
You will serve as a role model by demonstrating good workplace habits, positive communication, and strong leadership skills.
Collaborate with JA staff
JA staff will provide training and ongoing support. You’ll help keep the simulation running smoothly and ensure the students have a positive, educational experience.
Time commitment
A typical volunteer shift lasts one school day, usually about four to five hours. JA provides a short training session before the simulation begins, so no prior experience is necessary.
Your guidance helps students connect what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-life skills in a fun and impactful way.
