Position: Volunteer Policy Advocate – LGBTQIA+ Rights
Location: Austin, TX (Remote/Hybrid options available)
Reports To: LGBTQIA+ Rights Committee Lead
Commitment: Flexible hours, approximately 5-10 hours per week

Austin NOW (National Organization for Women) is dedicated to advancing gender equality and fighting for the rights of all marginalized groups. We are committed to advocating for the rights and protections of LGBTQIA+ individuals and ensuring that the voices of marginalized communities are heard. As part of our broader mission, we are looking for passionate and dedicated volunteers to join our LGBTQIA+ Rights Committee to help track relevant legislation and drive advocacy efforts.
Position Overview:
As a Policy Advocate for the LGBTQIA+ Rights Committee, you will play a key role in ensuring that LGBTQIA+ rights are protected through active monitoring of relevant legislation at the local, state, and national levels. You will help organize and lead advocacy campaigns, including letter-writing campaigns, petitions, and social media outreach to support critical legislation impacting the LGBTQIA+ community. You will also assist in crafting policy briefs, research reports, and advocacy materials to engage and mobilize the public in support of LGBTQIA+ rights.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legislative Tracking: Monitor, track, and analyze LGBTQIA+-related legislation and policy changes at the local, state, and federal levels.
- Advocacy Campaigns: Organize and coordinate letter-writing campaigns, petitions, phone banking, and other advocacy efforts to influence public policy and legislation.
- Public Outreach: Assist in the creation of materials for advocacy campaigns, including educational content and social media posts, to raise awareness and mobilize support.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the LGBTQIA+ Rights Committee and other committees within Austin NOW to ensure alignment in advocacy efforts and campaigns.
- Reporting: Provide regular updates on the status of legislation, the progress of advocacy campaigns, and any emerging issues or challenges to the LGBTQIA+ Rights Committee.
Qualifications:
- Passion for LGBTQIA+ rights and gender justice.
- Strong interest in public policy, advocacy, and legislative processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and online advocacy tools (e.g., Change.org, Action Network) is a plus.
- Previous experience in advocacy, activism, or public policy is desirable but not required.
