About this Opportunity

What You’ll Do

As a DHS Service Associate, you will:

  • Provide direct care to shelter residents, including assistance with daily living activities, wound care, and incontinence care.
  • Conduct health assessments, offer health education, and determine if advanced medical care is needed.
  • Assist clients in replacing medications, medical equipment, and supplies.
  • Advocate for clients' healthcare needs in collaboration with the Disaster Health Services supervisor.
  • Support maternal and child health needs when necessary.
  • Complete a combination of self-paced and instructor-led training (approximately 9 hours).

Time Commitment

  • Monthly: Approximately 4 hours.
  • During disaster relief operations: Increased availability for shifts (8-12 hours on consecutive days).

Who Can Apply?

We’re looking for individuals who:

  • Hold a current, unencumbered license in one of the following professions:
    • Registered Nurse (RN)
    • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
    • Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)*
    • Paramedic*
    • Medical Doctor (MD)
    • Doctor of Osteopathy (DO)
    • Physician Assistant (PA)
    • Nurse Practitioner (NP)
    • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
  • Are at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license (required for divisional and national deployments).
  • Are willing to volunteer in person at disaster shelters before, during, or after disaster events.
  • Can follow verbal and written instructions in English.
  • Are available to comply with Red Cross COVID-19 policies.
