About this Opportunity
Are you looking to make a difference in your community? Do you have a passion for helping others navigate the complex rules or systems? The Southern Maine Agency on Aging is seeking volunteers to help Medicare beneficiaries understand and access their coverage through the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) across York and Cumberland counties.
What You'll Do:
-Offer one-on-one confidential and unbiased counseling to Medicare beneficiaries and their representatives regarding Medicare, Medigap, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D, and Medicare Savings Programs.
-Assist beneficiaries by using Medicare.gov to compare prescription drug and Medicare Advantage plans.
-Helpcombat health care fraud, errors, and abuse
-Document interactions and report your volunteer hours and activities.
-Stay informed by participating in case reviews and other learning opportunities.
-Make appropriate referrals for other resources as needed
-Plus, opportunities to lead community presentations on Medicare!
What We're Looking For:
-Strong communication and listening skills.
-Basic computer and internet proficiency.
-Problem-solving abilities and a willingness to learn.
-Ability to work well with others from diverse backgrounds.
-A commitment to following confidentiality policies
Location: Various locations throughout York and Cumberland Counties, as well as remote options.
Flexible Hours: Volunteers can choose their availability, with counseling occurring primarily during business hours.
Duration: Minimum 1-year commitment required.
Training and Support:
-Attend a Three-Day Basic Medicare Training to get you up to speed on the fundamentals of Medicare. 2025 Trainings will occur in February, April, June, August and October
-Shadow current volunteers (and gradually take on the responsibility of mentoring future volunteers!)
-Complete the SHIP Online Certification Counselor Exam
-Stay up-to-date on Medicare changes through regulartrainings and reviewing our resource site, all facilitated by our Medicare Team!
-Receive professional training, ongoing mentoring, and the chance to contribute to a meaningful cause.
