About this Opportunity
Advise NC at Duke University is a college access and postsecondary success program that places full-time, recent college graduates¿known as Next Step Advisers¿in North Carolina high schools to support students in planning for life after graduation. The program focuses on increasing access to higher education and career pathways, particularly for low-income, first-generation, and underserved students. Through a near-peer advising model, advisers work directly with students, families, and school staff to provide individualized guidance on college admissions, financial aid, career exploration, military options, and workforce pathways. Advisers deliver one-on-one advising, classroom presentations, workshops, and school-wide initiatives that promote a strong college-going culture and ensure every student has a clear postsecondary plan. The program operates as part of a broader statewide Advise NC initiative and is supported by partners including AmeriCorps and philanthropic organizations such as the John M. Belk Endowment. Advisers receive extensive training and ongoing professional development to effectively support students through complex processes like FAFSA completion, college applications, and enrollment decisions. Advise NC at Duke emphasizes a whole-school approach, serving all students rather than a select group, and leverages university resources and community partnerships to expand opportunities. By addressing gaps in college advising and increasing awareness of postsecondary options, the program helps students make informed decisions and successfully transition into education, careers, or service after high school.
