About this Opportunity
The Mosquito Range Heritage Initiative (MRHI), based in Alma, Colorado¿the highest incorporated town in North America¿is a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to preserving the natural and cultural legacy of the Mosquito Range. Since 2007, MRHI has worked to protect a rugged and resource-rich landscape vital to the daily lives of local residents. These mountains aren¿t just scenery¿they¿re where neighbors gather firewood, hunt, fish, access clean water, and connect with the land in meaningful, practical ways.
This region contains irreplaceable alpine ecosystems, rare plants, and rich natural resources¿but with increasing visitation, recreational traffic, and development pressures, it¿s more important than ever to ensure smart, balanced stewardship. As the only conservation-focused organization in the area, MRHI works from the ground up, alongside residents, to protect what matters most.
The AmeriCorps VISTA member will play a vital role in advancing MRHI¿s mission by helping build community-driven conservation programs, empowering local youth through education and leadership development, and strengthening partnerships with schools, businesses, and public agencies. This role will also support fundraising efforts to sustain long-term conservation and educational initiatives.
This position is ideal for someone who values hard work, rural living, and the strength of close-knit communities, and who¿s ready to help shape the future of conservation in Colorado¿s high country.
