Ending Hunger Corps Healthy Futures VISTA

As a child, our founder George Walter (GW) Hinckley ¿witnessed another boy¿s arrest for reaching into a working man¿s dinner pail. GW asked himself why no one had noticed that the young boy had been without food for three consecutive days. He was not a criminal; he was simply hungry. At that point GW vowed to come to the aid of young boys in similar plight. He would build a house ¿ houses ¿ and provide homes for those in need. Since its founding in 1889, for over 135 years, the Good Will idea to provide a home and helping hand to youth and families in need has stood tall and proud on our beautiful campus in Fairfield, Maine. This VISTA project cuts to the core of our mission, focusing on Maslow¿s basic needs regarding food. The Healthy Futures Program tackles food insecurity and promotes healthy eating habits among our students and their families. The VISTA has a crucial role in the school-based Campus Cupboard (food pantry), nutrition education workshops, and cooking classes, providing the necessary resources and knowledge to foster healthier lifestyles.
GSLC is dedicated to fostering personal growth and resilience through comprehensive educational programs and community partnerships. By addressing the pressing issue of food insecurity affecting many of our students through our Healthy Futures Program, we aim to provide immediate relief while equipping our community with the knowledge and skills to maintain healthy lifestyles in the long term. This opportunity comes with housing on the Good Will¿Hinckley campus, access to a supportive network of community partners, and the chance to work in an environment that promotes educational success for all students. The VISTA will be an active Member of Ending Hunger Corps, a cohort that serves food security organizations throughout Maine and with program staff, provides a strong support system with additional benefits for each Member.
