About this Opportunity
Led by the Kansas Association for Conservation and Environmental Education (KACEE), the Environmental Education Corps (eeCorps) AmeriCorps Program places AmeriCorps members at organizations throughout Kansas to focus on increasing environmental literacy for PreK-12 students and building capacity for environmental education in the region. eeCorps works directly with teachers, schools, and environmental education providers to support them in expanding the reach and increasing the impact of EE programming, while providing access to equitable learning experiences for all PreK-12 students. This position will be located at the Great Plains Nature Center in Wichita, KS. Serving the city of Wichita and the surrounding areas, the Great Plains Nature Center sits on Chisholm Creek Park, a nature oasis in the middle of the city with 280 acres of prairies, wetlands, and woodlands, viewable from walking trails. Inside the nature center are exhibits focused on healthy habitats and live animal ambassadors on display, which are used for environmental education programs. Special events, field trips, weekly programs, and outreach provide the community with free, hands-on nature-based learning. Some of the activities may include, but are not limited to, taking care of a variety of ambassador animals used for learning programs; develop and provide programming for schools, community organizations, and homeschool groups; correspond with teachers and other community leaders; develop new outreach programming; help plan and provide special events; assist in general operations including but not limited to interacting with daily visitors, working with volunteers, answering wildlife & plant questions, program & exhibit animal care, program preparations and clean-up; assist with other special projects as assigned; attend staff meetings and all AmeriCorps meetings and activities.
