About this Opportunity

The Maine Appalachian Trail Club (MATC) builds, maintains, and protects the section of the Appalachian Trail (A.T. or Trail) in Maine, extending from Katahdin to Grafton Notch. This work includes maintaining the treadway, campsites and corridor lands to safeguard and ensure access to the wild regions of Maine through which the Trail passes. The Appalachian Trail National Scenic Trail in Maine offers a rugged, awe-inspiring landscape of northern hardwood forests, spruce¿fir ecosystems, glacial lakes, remote ponds and streams, and alpine summits. This corridor serves as both a vital carbon sink and a climate refuge for native species. The Maine Appalachian Trail Club¿s wilderness education program uniquely connects participants to this nationally significant landscape through immersive, place-based experiences on the Appalachian Trail itself. MATC is one of thirty clubs responsible for maintaining the Appalachian Trail in partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the National Park Service, and state agencies. Each year, hundreds of volunteers contribute roughly 15,000 hours to the Trail. They maintain trail sections, clear downed and hazard trees, maintain waterbars, paint blazes, build bog bridges, build and repair shelters and privies, clean firepits, remove trash, monitor corridor lands, publish a newsletter, and maintain MATC¿s website, databases, and more.
